Daniel Smith has a huge number of colors, a crazy number like 300 or more. M. Graham has about 80 colors, and many are single pigments. They are kind of a boutique paint maker; DS is a much bigger company with a lot more marketing.. A few Winsor & Newtons and Schmincke bought when there's a sale at Jacksonsart. Cheers!:) Meryl. Here I'm refilling one of my favourite colours; Daniel Smith quinacridone coral. Once I'd got my lineup sorted I created a colour chart by drawing out on Arches watercolour card four rows of 13 boxes corresponding to the layout of my palette and watercoloured a swatch of each colour in the right box.

Great article! Thank you. I have used Daniel Smith and Schmincke's transparent grounds. Love the feel of fine Schmincke's ground hower it makes everything applied to it really movable. I use it in between layers to seal before next step. D.Smith one is really nice as well but prefer the previous one for watercolour behaviour on it.

My favourites are Da Vinci and Daniel Smith, though I also like the new Schmincke French Ultramarine added in 2017. These photos are taken under 'sunlight' bulbs with no adjustment for best comparison. Daniel Smith and Schmincke also make good versions with a decent amount of granulation, but Daniel Smith is slightly preferable due to less binder gloss compared to Schmincke. I did not like the weaker, less granulating, harder to re-wet versions from Rembrandt or W&N. DaVinci falls in the middle with good pigment load but no interesting granulation.

Well-known brands include Daniel Smith, Winsor & Newton, M. Graham, Sennelier, Da Vinci, Holbein, Schmincke, Van Gogh and Rembrandt. I'm sure there are others, but these are some of the best known paints - although I still believe that Daniel Smith, Winsor and Newton, and M. Graham count as some of the highest quality paint brands.

Daniel Smith Watercolours - Alizarin Crimson, Rhodonite Genuine, Carmine, Rose Madder Genuine (discontinued 2017), Rose Madder Permanent (new 2017), Opera Pink. The gentle Potter's Pink has gorgeous granulation and can be used as part of an earth triad. Many of the Daniel Smith quinacridone colours are quite similar.

Cupric Green Deep (PG7) is = Schmincke Phthalo green (PG7) very similar. The Primary Yellow (PY97) of MB is bright and transparent. Your garnet lake (PR 88) surprises me, I have it in tube form it is a very deep rich wine color and is exactly like Daniel Smiths PR 88 in depth. I wonder if it is pan vs tube difference?
