Great Egret Let's Go Travel Australia

The elegant Great Egret is a dazzling sight in many a North American wetland. Slightly smaller and more svelte than a Great Blue Heron, these are still large birds with impressive wingspans. They hunt in classic heron fashion, standing immobile or wading through wetlands to capture fish with a deadly jab of their yellow bill.

The Eastern Great Egrets ( Ardea modesta) is a white heron of the genus Ardea. Previously considered a subspecies of the Great Egret ( A. alba ), it was raised to full species status in 2005. In New Zealand, where it is known as the kōtuku, the Eastern Great Egret is highly endangered, with only one breeding site at Okarito Lagoon.

The Eastern Great Egret is the largest of the Australian egrets. Great Egrets prefer shallow water, particularly when flowing, but may be seen on any watered area, including damp grasslands. Great Egrets can be seen alone or in small flocks, often with other egret species, and roost at night in groups. The Great Egret usually feeds alone.

The great egret (Ardea alba) is a large, graceful white heron which can be found across most of Australia. With heights approaching 1 m and wingspans over 1.5 m, it is larger than the similar looking white-faced heron. Great egrets have beautiful long, filmy plumes on their backs during breeding season.
